Investigation Underway After Man Dies in Long Beach Police Custody

According to Long Beach Police Department, officers realized the 47-year-old man was unresponsive after they had to use force to detain him.

An investigation is underway after a man died Saturday while in custody of Long Beach police, officials said.

Police responded to a home in the 3200 block of Ladoga Avenue around 10:40 a.m. after reports of a man, possibly under the influence of narcotics, acting violently and destroying the residence.

The Orange County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Manuel Ornelas, 47.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, officers realized Ornelas was unresponsive after they had to use force to detain him. Life-saving measures were performed by officers until the Long Beach Fire Department transported the man to a local hospital where he later died.

A preliminary investigation revealed officers saw the man throwing a television out a second-story window and breaking several windows inside the home. Officers also said the man was bleeding profusely.

Independent investigations will be conducted by the Long Beach Police Department Homicide Detail, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and the Los Angeles County Coroner's office.
