The Santa Clara County Coroner on Thursday identified the boy who was beaten in Roosevelt Park on Friday night , and died a few days later, as 14-year-old Heriberto Reyes of San Jose.
The eighth grader at Bernal Intermediate School died Monday at Regional Medical Center.
Police have not released a motive for the 6:55 p.m. Friday attack, only than to say it likely was gang-related, and that the boy was the likely the innocent target of the savage beating.
The park, between Julian and Santa Clara streets, is a known gang hotspot.
The teen became the city's 13th homicide of 2012.
