No Monday Night Football for 49ers in 2014

Traffic and transit studies needed before Monday night game can happen.

Football fans -- are you ready for a traffic study?

Santa Clara's new 49ers football stadium won't host any Monday games, or any Thursday games -- or anything aside from tilts on Sundays in its inaugural season next year, according to Santa Clara city officials.

The San Jose Mercury News was the first to report that there won't be any 5:40 p.m. Monday night kickoffs at Levi's Stadium -- which would lead to 70,000 fans jockeying for position with thousands more commuters during rush hour on Highway 101 -- until city officials do some traffic studies.

As per the city of Santa Clara's Dan Berman, the city will hit the data before a weeknight kickoff. That will disappoint backers of the $1.3 billion stadium, who want to show it off to the world (though they'll have their chance with Super Bowl 50 in 2016).

Santa Clara spent $200 million on the new stadium, which could host Monday Night games in 2015 "and beyond," the newspaper reported.

That's too bad for the 49ers, who have been playing the league-maximum of five primetime games over the past few years.

The league's most-traveled team can still play Monday games on the road -- as they will this coming week, when the team travels to Washington to play Robert Griffin III and the Redskins.
