Al Davis Death Certificate Reveals Cause of Death

TMZ obtains a copy of legendary Raiders' owners death certificate and makes it public.

Leave it to TMZ to be cute when it comes to the passing of a Bay Area icon.

But the gossip site has obtained the death certificate of legendary Oakland Raiders' owner Al Davis.

And what does TMZ say is the cause of Mr. Davis' death: A broken heart.

The site is actually not too far off. The death certificate obtained from the Alameda County Coroner's Office reveals that Mr. Davis died of:

  • Ventricular fibrillation -- a dangerously abnormal heart rhythm
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Cardiomyopathy -- heart muscle disease

The 82-year-old owner passed away at 2:45 a.m. at the Oakland Airport Hilton on Oct. 8.

The document also reveals that Mr. Davis underwent throat surgery just three days before his death and that he suffered from an aggressive form of skin cancer called Merkel cell carcinoma.

He had also undergone a procedure on his heart in 1996 and he had been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy.

A full copy of the death certificate is available on TMZ's website.
