CHP Officer Involved in Shooting in Martinez

The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Saturday night officer-involved shooting in Martinez involving a California Highway Patrol officer, a sheriff's office spokesman said.

Sheriff's office spokesman Jimmy Lee said the shooting occurred on 4600 block of Pacheco Boulevard around 9:30 p.m.

CHP was chasing a car in the Pacheco area, and during the pursuit, the 29-year-old suspect let a 7-year-old child out of the car, Lee said. He then allegedly ran into a CHP car and tried to hit a Martinez police car.

The chase ended when his car hit a telephone pole and a parked car, according to police. As the man got out of his car, police said his hands were concealed in his waistband.

The officer feared for his life and decided to shoot the suspect who refused to follow orders, police said.

Police found a gun in the man's vehicle and drugs were found on him.

The man shot was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. The suspect's injuries are not considered life-threatening.
