Colma Crematory Catches Fire

A body was being prepped to be cremated when the fire started.

Firefighters battled a three-alarm fire at a crematory in Colma Wednesday morning, a fire dispatcher said.

The fire was first reported at the Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, located at 1370 El Camino Real, at 9:30 a.m.

The crematory is across the street from the main Cypress Lawn building.

Fire Chief Geoffery Balton said while preparing to do a cremation, a fire broke out in the crematory portion of the building.  He said the exact cause of the fire was unknown.  Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to the chapel next door.

Two bodies were moved to another facility because of the fire.

The crematory was completely destroyed.  No one was hurt.

A total of 45 firefighters were on the scene fighting the fire. Some crews will remain on-scene throughout the afternoon to prevent any flare-ups

The building was first built 1892 and a crematory was added in the 1920’s, according to employees.
