30 Birds, “Many Fish” Thought to be Dead in San Mateo Fire

Firefighters put out a two-alarm fire at a two story building in San Mateo on Friday morning, where about 30 birds and "many fish" are thought to have died, but caused no human injuries.

Also, according to resident Tammy Hill, three cats are unaccounted for.

San Mateo Battalion Chief Gary Hegwer said there was "extensive damage" to one unit at the complex in the 3300 block of La Selva Street.

The fire was first reported around 5:15 a.m. but knocked down within the hour.

Hill said she and her 5-year-old daughter, along with two other adults were able to escape without injury, but they are displaced because of the damage.
