San Francisco's police chief is withdrawing his request to equip officers with stun guns as part of a pilot program, saying suggestions to limit use of the guns would have increased the risk to officers and the public.
Those suggestions included restricting use of the devices on the elderly and on suspects who were too thin or near traffic.
Chief Greg Suhr told the police commission on Wednesday he thinks those limitations are too rigid and would have created "pause'' in the minds of officers that would have increased their risk.
San Francisco is among a handful of major cities in the United States whose police department does not use stun guns.
The city's police commission had previously rejected two proposals for use of the weapons, citing safety and liability concerns.
