2 Officers Injured, 1 Suspect Shot, Another Arrested in Hayward

An officer-involved shooting in Hayward injured two officers and sent one man to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

Details were still murky late into Saturday evening. According to onlookers and police, however, it appears that an officer was tailing an allegedly stolen Mercedes at about 5 p.m. when the patrol car and Mercedes coupe crashed near Tennyson Road and Interstate 880.

An officer was injured in the initial crash, but did not require medical assistance. In the immediate aftermath, it was unclear whether police fired their weapons causing the Mercedes to crash, or if the suspects attempted to strike the car and flee the area.

Police did not say whether either suspect had a gun.

"The suspect vehicle was reamming police vehicles and also hit an officer who was on foot in the area, knocking him down, and officers did discharge their firearm," said Tasha DeCosta with the Hayward Police Department.

The suspect who ran was taken into custody and the other was rushed to the hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds.

Neighbor Jodi Zybul describes the chaotic scene.

"All I heard was the gunshots and a car," she said. "It sounded like a big muscle car revving its engine...I heard some screeching."

Officers did not release the age of the suspects, but neighbors say both men looked young.

"All of a sudden, I saw the guy running toward this direction and then being followed or chased by the policemen," said Francisco Intal of Hayward, who saw the scene unfold. "It's scary."

Hayward has been battling a spike in violent crime this year, putting both residents and police on high alert.
