Two girls playing in the water in Discovery Bay were injured Saturday morning when a hydrofoil broke apart and hit them, a Discovery Bay Yacht harbor master said.

Sometime between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. the watercraft broke apart while a man was riding it and hit one girl in the head and the other in the shoulder in the Fast Water area of Discovery Bay, the harbor master said.

Two helicopters responded to the accident and took the girls from the water. The girls reportedly were not seriously injured, the harbor master said.

He called it a "freak accident." The man riding the hydrofoil was not injured.
