Historic Telephone Unveiled in California 100 Years After First Call

Historic telephones will be on display in San Francisco to mark 100 years since the first transcontinental phone call between New York City and San Francisco.

On Jan. 25, 1915 the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (now AT&T) conducted the call before the opening of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition and World's Fair in San Francisco.

To mark the historical moment, AT&T is returning the original telephones to San Francisco to be on public display at the California Historical Society gallery as part of PPIE100 โ€“ a yearlong series of exhibitions, events and activities. The exhibition opens Feb. 21.

The first transcontinental call occurred between New York City, San Francisco, Georgia and Washington, DC. Telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell initiated the call.
