A body found in the water near the home of the San Francisco Giants last month has been identified as that of a missing Brazilian who was visiting the Bay Area for the weekend.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office said Friday said the body seen floating in McCovey Cove, adjacent to AT&T Park, near Pier 48 on the morning of Nov. 9 is that of 22-year-old Paulo Netto. He had moved from Brazil to Los Angeles and was visiting San Francisco in October.

On Oct. 28, Netto had called family in Brazil and a friend in Los Angeles saying  he was in trouble and needed the police to help him.

His sister, Ana Rodrigues, told NBC Bay Area in November that her brother had called her just before he disappeared.

"He was saying, 'Ana call the police I'm in trouble, people are following me,'" she said at the time. Police traced those phone calls to the 500 block of Shotwell  Street in the city's Mission District.

"Obviously, he was terrified," she added.

When the body was retrieved from the water last month, police said  it was badly decomposed and difficult to identify.

San Francisco police spokesman Albie Esparza told NBC Bay Area that the agency is waiting for results to come back from the autopsy to determine the next steps of the investigation.
