Runway Construction Delays Flights Out of San Francisco International Airport

Work to rehabilitate a runway sparked flight delays at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday, impacting travelers at the start of a busy holiday weekend.

The airport reported more than 250 delays ranging from 15 to 45 minutes as of 5 p.m. Some flights were delayed even longer, and 21 flights were canceled all together.

The delays some travelers faced at SFO were compounded by a global IT failure that knocked out some British Airways flights scheduled to leave London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

Tullio Fontana of San Jose was about to embark on his Italian vacation when the British Airways problem started.

"It's extremely frustrating, especially if you have a connection," he said.

Airport officials are encouraging travelers leaving San Francisco to check with their airline for specific flight delays.
