Police have arrested the owner of an illegal nightclub in an industrial area of San Jose that served alcohol, employed dozens of waitresses, and was outfitted with eight VIP rooms, a police spokeswoman said.

At 12:51 a.m. Friday, police received a report of a large fight in front of a private nightclub at 800 Commercial St., police Sgt. Heather Randol said.

The owner of the unlicensed club was running a hostess-style bar in a warehouse that was subdivided into eight locked, private VIP rooms, Randol said.

Thirty waitresses were working there.

The VIP rooms were set up for alcohol service, and the owner did not have a proper license from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, Randol said.

The club also had a makeshift kitchen and a stock of beer and high-end liquor, police said.

Officers seized evidence, including bottles of alcohol and money the owner was carrying, Randol said.

Patrons at the club were interviewed by officers and then ordered to leave, Randol said.

The owner, whose name has not been released, was arrested on suspicion of violating state and local alcohol and business codes, Randol said.

The case has been submitted to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office for review, she said.
