Santa Cruz: Best Place to Surf in the Country

Surfer Mag names SC top spot

If you want to surf the best waves, head down the coast to Santa Cruz. That's right, the Central Coast community is the best place to catch waves, according to Surfer Magazine.

The mag named the city as the No. 1 surfing spot in the nation, beating out hot spots like Hawaii, Southern California and places on the East Coast.

While there might still be debate over who's really the namesake behind a famous surfing song, the local spot is the best place to rip some gnarly waves.

"Huntington Beach may have won the right to the name 'Surf City, USA' in the California courts, but any surfer who's ever paddled out at Steamer Lane knows the judge got it wrong," Surfer Magazine states.

Here are the top 10 best spots to surf, according to the article:

  1. Santa Cruz
  2. Haleiwa, Hawaii
  3. Encinitas
  4. Paia, Hawaii
  5. San Clemente
  6. Kill Devil Hills
  7. Malibu
  8. Montauk, N.Y.
  9. New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
  10. Ocean City, N.J.

In March, UC Santa Cruz was named the second best in the nation on their list of 10 Best Surf Colleges in America.
