Walnut Creek Considers Managing Downtown Parking

The rising trend of cities managing parking may become law in an East Bay community.

Walnut Creek is proposing to control parking in the city's downtown.

"We've shown there's parking available downtown," said Matt Huffaker, assistant to the Walnut Creek city manager. "So while it might be hard to find parking on the street at times, our garages have plenty of space."

City officials are considering doubling meter rates to push shoppers and diners into underused parking garages, which in turn would help fix downtown Walnut Creek's parking dilemma.

"It may mean you pay a little more for your own street stay if you're parking in a meter," Huffaker said. "It could also mean if you park in our city garages you can park for a longer period of time at a lower cost."
