Walnut Creek PD Fatally Shoot Armed Man

Walnut Creek police said officers fatally shot an armed man early Thursday at an apartment complex on Creekside Drive.

Capt. Tim Schultz said the officer involved shooting - the first in at least five years - involved more than one officer and happened about 3:15 a.m. at the Diablo Pointe Apartments.

Late on Thursday, the Contra Costa County Coroner identified the man as Anthony Banta Jr., 22, of Walnut Creek. Schultz said this was "an isolated incident" related to the people inside the apartment.

No more information was released about why Banta was killed or why officers were called to the scene, but police said that the initial call went to the California Highway Patrol and that a woman's voice was heard screaming in the background.

That call was routed to the fire department, which was then routed to Walnut Creek police dispatch.

The officers were put on paid administrative leave.
