A man accused of drunkenly strolling down a road in Maine wearing a black-hooded sweatshirt and a clown mask and brandishing a machete taped to his amputated arm has been arrested.

Maine State Police said 31-year-old Corey Berry, of Hollis, was arrested Tuesday and charged with criminal threatening. He was released after posting $200 bail.

Police say Berry was first spotted walking on Plains Road in Hollis around 6 p.m. before fleeing into the woods. He was taken into custody after re-emerging in Waterboro.

"It's pretty unsettling," said Lindsey Morton of Waterboro. She said the clown came out of the woods beside her home. Her husband watched as police took down the clown and arrested him.

Police said Berry was intoxicated but cooperative. He told officers he was copying previous clown sightings as a prank, similar to the creepy clown sightings that made national news last summer.

"He has a very weird way of doing pranks," said Paula Libby of Hollis, who lives on Plains Road. "A clown is supposed to be happy. That clown would scare the daylights out of anybody."

Berry was released from York County Jail after posting $200 bail.

A phone number for Berry couldn't be found Wednesday, and it wasn't known if he has a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
