49ers Turn to Troy Smith at QB

The David Carr era did not last long for the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers are benching Carr after one miserable half of a game and going with third-string quarterback Troy Smith this Sunday in London against the Denver Broncos.

49ers coach Mike Singletary told the San Francisco Chronicle that Troy Smith, the other Smith option at quarterback, will get the nod with Alex Smith injured and David Carr disgraced after the Carolina loss.

David Carr gets sacked even in countries where the word "sacked" means something different.

"I think the bottom line is, I think for where we are, I think Troy Smith gives us a good opportunity to win the game," Singletary said. "He's been studying since he's been here and getting with the coaches as much as he possibly can. He has enough of the offense to play."

Troy Smith joined the 49ers as a free agent this summer, after three seasons as a backup with the Baltimore Ravens. He has never taken a snap in a regular season game with the 49ers, and completed 54% of his passes for a 64.8 quarterback rating in his four 49ers preseason appearances.

Hey, the 49ers were undefeated in the preseason! Does anyone still remember that?

Don't forget that in college, Troy Smith won a Heisman Trophy and led his team to an NCAA championship game.

Then again, Ken Dorsey had some pretty good college credentials, too.

Joe Kukura is a freelance writer who wonders if Troy Smith won't be the interim head coach by the time this season is over.
