Bad news out of Carolina as quarterback Donovan McNabb broke a rib during the Birds 38-10 romp of the Panthers.

The injury could keep McNabb out for two to four weeks.

The Birds, though, are taking the injury day by day, said Head Coach Andy Reid after the game. He left open the possibility that No.5 could play next week against the Saints.

D-Mac was injured while scoring a touchdown to put the Eagles up 38-10 on the Panthers with 6:59 left in the third quarter. He went down in the end zone after getting hit by at least three Panthers as he drove the ball past the goal line.

He immediately seemed to be reaching for his knee but it was the cracked ribs that would take McNabb out of the game.

After being tended to by trainers McNabb left the field on his own power and seemed enthusiastic as he walked towards the Birds’ locker room.

He walked back onto the field with about 1:30 left in the third quarter and was seen sitting on the Eagles bench but occasionally grimacing with pain.

If McNabb plays next week could depend on how much he can deal with the pain. Remember that he played a game a few years ago on a broken leg -- so it could happen.

Kevin Kolb replaced No. 5 under center he could start the Eagles home opener next week as Michael Vick won't be allowed to play until Week 3.
