New SaberCat Coach Knows the Job Well

It was like homecoming week for the San Jose SaberCats as the team introduced Darren Arbet as head coach Wednesday.  Arbet is of course, the team's old coach as well.  He has lead the SaberCats to three ArenaBowl Championships and was chosen twice as Arena Football League Coach of the Year.

"We are very excited to be welcoming Darren back to the SaberCats," said co-owner Dave Fry. "We have enjoyed great success with him as our coach and we look forward to competing for future ArenaBowl Championships as the SaberCats make their return for the 2011 AFL season."

This upcoming season is Arbet's 11th with the team, which shut down for a year because of financial problems at a league level.

But now they are back and ready to compete for their loyal Bay Area fans.

Arbet is a former player who joined the SaberCats for their inaugural season back in 1995.

He's been a fan favorite ever since.

"I am extremely honored to return to the SaberCats, where we enjoyed so much success and a loyal following over the years," Arbet said. "I look forward to continuing the winning traditions we established here during my time with San Jose and with the help of my staff, hope to bring additional championships to the SaberCats organization."

One of his first jobs as coach is to hold a open player tryout Saturday, September 25 at the team facility in Sunnyvale.
