Heisman trophy nominee, Toby Gerhart of Stanford University, had news to celebrate Thursday night when he won the Doak Walker award, honored to the nation’s best running back.

Gerhart accepted the award at the annual college football awards show at Disney World on Thursday night.

Gerhart had more yards rushing (1,736) and touchdowns (26) than any player in the country, according to ESPN. He led No. 19 Stanford (8-4) to second-place in the Pac-10 and to the Sun Bowl—Stanford’s first bowl bid in eight years.

The award comes just before the Heisman trophy announcement tomorrow at 5 p.m. (PST) on ESPN.

In this most closely watched Heisman race in years, Gerhart is one of the five finalists. Gerhart is in tight competition but the Bay Area has a good chance of being a home to a Heisman trophy winner tomorrow.

ESPN Experts poll and Sports Illustrated’s Gene Menez of the Heisman Watch picked Gerhart and running back Mark Ingraham of Alabama as the two most likely winners.
