A suspected car thief is in police custody after driving, running and finally swimming away before his arrest, according to reports.
Terry Rizzo, on probation for vehicle theft, was spotted driving a stolen vehicle by Alameda County sheriff's deputies near the Oakland Estuary, according to the Contra Costa Times.
Rizzo also had an active warrant for his arrest -- also for car theft -- and did not stop when deputies flashed for a pull-over, the newspaper reported. He drove away, and officers chased him to the Embarcadero Bridge, where he hit a UPS truck, the newspaper reported.
He exited the car, leaving a passenger to be arrested, and continued on foot along the bridge. With deputies on his tail, he leapt into the water, and began to swim. Upon reaching the opposite shore, he found himself boxed in by sheriff's, and so returned to the water.
Police said he boarded a sailboat, before officers on helicopters, boats and with dogs made an arrest.
No one was injured in the chase, which may have had something to do with the contents of Rizzo's pockets: methaphetamine, according to police.
