Rasputin Music, the largest indie record store chain in the Bay Area, first opened its doors in Berkeley on the ungroomed backs of the hippie revolution back in 1971. When the store opened in the heart of Telegraph Avenue it was known for its low prices. It now has nine stores known for the ultra-specific classification of their albums and huge inventory of used records. Rasputin has also developed a reputation and following for its in-house magazine and Web site.

  • Hasheem My experience at the Berkeley store was horrible!!!! The customer service person was rude and had no knowledge of music. I prefer Amoeba for selection and customer serive. If you have a choose go to Amoeba Thursday, Jun 11 at 2:55 PM
  • Eric I live in Campbell, so if I want to go to Rasputin I can just cross the street. If I want to go to Amoeba, I either have to spend a fortune on gas and parking, or a fortune on the train. Wednesday, Mar 4 at 2:40 PM
  • chirs Amoeba is in LA it is no longer local rasputin has a much better selection Monday, Feb 16 at 6:53 PM
  • seth i like amoeba too, but rasputin gets my vote for having more local stores, which makes it more convenient for me. amoeba needs a store in the south bay. Sunday, Feb 15 at 1:05 AM
  • Javier I'm a big fan of Rasputin Music. It's closer to my workplace than Amoeba (for just a block) and they always treat me nice when I buy my vynil. Saturday, Feb 14 at 11:07 PM
