Muir Woods to Hike Fees January 1

A $2 additional fee will be added to entrance price to help preserves local state parks.

With tne new year comes new fees.

The entrance fee to Muir Woods National Monument will increase from $5 to $7 starting Jan. 1.

The new fees comes after the California State Parks Department announced earlier this year the closure of 70 of its 278 parks due to budget cuts.

Some of those parks under threat where in the Bay Area.

"Muir Woods, Golden Gate, and Mt. Tamalpais State Park are inextricably linked in the complex watershed of Redwood Creek," Golden Gate National Recreation Area General Superintendent Frank Dean said in a statement.

Muir Wood's visitors will now be charged an additional $2 state park fee simultaneously with the current $5 federal fee for visitors 16-year-old or older to help preserve the parks.
