Bikers compete for space on the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

Golden Gate Bridge officials put the brakes on a plan to reduce the bike speed limit on the bridge to 10 mph in open areas and 5 mph around towers and in construction zones.

During a meeting Thursday of the bridge's Building and Operations Committee many bikers expressed concern and surprise that they had not be consulted in the first place. The board apparently agreed and said it would take the issue up again after they get more input.

The goal of the proposal was to reduce accidents on the bridge. Speed was cited as a factor in 39 percent of the 164 bicycle crashes on the span between 2000 and 2009, according to reports.

Right now there is no speed limit and bikers have been clocked going more than 20 mph.
