Muni Chaos: Thousands Stranded by Tunnel Accident

Commuters take to Twitter to vent about slow service, lack of communication

Another bad day for mass transit in "transit-first" San Francisco: A derailment in the Twin Peaks Tunnel left thousands stranded and with little to no information about alternate service.

Aggravated riders took to Twitter, with comments including "Muni is being hell of scandalous," "I've been waiting for Muni for 30 mins," "Muni is like Lindsay Lohan ... such a hot mess," "lovely 2.5 hour commute this morning" ... and those are just the Tweets that didn't have profanity.

Elsewhere this morning, a car and a J-Church collided in Noe Valley.

Muni didn't inform riders about detours and delays until later in the day, and massive crowds quickly <a href="overwhelmed the replacement shuttles. Muni has the capability to send alerts to riders via the NextBus signs installed at many bus stops, but chose not to. There was no estimate for when service would be restored.

In completely unrelated news, the price of a monthly Muni pass with BART access is scheduled to increase to $70 in January.
