Earthquake Disaster Prompts Japan to Embrace U.S. Social Media

While China still blocks some of America's most popular social media services, Japan's office of the Prime Minister took the recent earthquake disaster as an opportunity to join the ranks of Facebook and Twitter.

Launched Wednesday, the government's Facebook page (now with 4,500 fans) is written all in English and offers the first real transparent look into the tech-centric nation's inner workings.

The office's Twitter account (now with 22,000 followers) was launched just eight days ago and features tweets translated into English by Kantei Saigai.

If you have friends or family in Japan and want to plug the country into your social media stream you can Facebook friend Japan here and follow its tweets here.
