V-O-Cal: Harvey Bear Park

Are you looking for a challenge?

This V-O-Cal sponsored trail building event will undoubtably be the most strenuous Bay Area Proud event we have worked on.

It will take place in Santa Clara County at Coyote Lake/Harvey Bear Park, and we will help build a significant and technical 1500 foot section.

The section we will work on is on a steep slope and is very rocky and technical. This project will be different from the other new trail we have built because the county crew will make the first pass, digging out the rough trail with a Sweco machine, making this a hybrid between total new trail construction and intensive trail repair.

We will then refine the cut to get a good smooth tread and the right outslope and backslope. We will also install several short rock retaining walls. All of this will serve to give the trail a more natural, hand built look. The park is actively grazed and it is expected that cattle will use the trail as much as people will, so we will protect the trail tread by spreading shale on the surface. We will form "Barrow Brigades" to move as much as 10 TONS of shale up and down the hill to create the final, finished trail.

It is going to be a great project. We get to camp next to the lake in an established campground with nice trees and hot showers! We'll have good food, good people and good times, so come out and join us!
