Davis Police Warn Parents About Teens Abusing Cough Medicine

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Davis Police are warning parents about an over-the-counter cold medicine that's been used recreationally by area teens.

The Sacramento Bee reports Coricidin HBP Cough & Cold is also referred to as Triple C and can cause a hallucinogenic high when taken well above the recommended dose. People who abuse it risk injury and negative health effects including nausea and loss of consciousness.

Police recently contacted several middle-school-age students who used the drug and say one of them required medical attention. Authorities say they suspect teens are stealing the medicine, which can be taken in pill or liquid form.

Information cited by Davis Police from the National Drug Intelligence Center says the drug is safe when taken in recommended doses.
