At least two home were involved in a three-alarm fire in the East Foothills of San Jose.

The blaze reported Tuesday afternoon on McVay Avenue started as a vegetation fire and spread to a residence, firefighters said.

"There were lots of flames and they consumed two big trees," resident Raymond Su said. "The flames were much taller than the houses."

Firefighters said the blaze spread to part of one home and caused smoke damage to another. Crews had to deal with steep terrain, dry grass and temperatures soaring past 100 degrees.

It was so hot during the response, firefighters could only work 40-minute shifts before being relieved by backups.

SJFD Capt. Mitch Matlow said one firefighter had a heat-related problem, but was not taken to the hospital.

Firefighters confirm they received several reports from neighbors saying they saw power lines smoke and then saw at least one home catch fire.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
