San Lorenzo Man Arrested in Connection to Hit-and-Run That Killed 14-Year-Old Ivan Cruz

A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a teenage boy near San Leandro last week, Alameda County sheriff's officials said Monday.

Sonny Anderson was arrested following the death of 14-year-old Ivan Cruz, who was struck at 6:19 p.m. Tuesday while in a crosswalk at East 14th Street and Ashland Avenue, sheriff's officials said.

Anderson, a San Lorenzo resident, was allegedly the driver of the 2001 maroon Saturn that struck Ivan and fled.

The car was later found and impounded as evidence, according to the California Highway Patrol. Authorities said the car, which was borrowed from a relative, is known to deputies because Anderson had been previously arrested in it for other offenses.

"We knew Sonny Anderson had a warrant out for his arrest, and we believe that may have been the reason why he ran from us in the first place," Alameda County Sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

Nelson said the outstanding warrant was for missing a court date for driving under the influence of drugs. Officials also said Anderson's criminal record includes trying to kill an elderly woman and stabbing animals at a Hayward petting zoo.

Anderson was arrested last Wednesday in Newark, when law enforcement tracked him down at a friend's house. A police dog bit Anderson in the arm while he tried to hide in the garage.

Anderson is set to be arraigned at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hayward Hall of Justice on charges of murder, hit-and-run and evading police, according to jail records. He is currently being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on no bail.
