Newark Police Investigating Suspicious Death After Body Found Inside Home During Welfare Check

Police are investigating a suspicious death after finding a woman's body inside a Newark home during a welfare check.

Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 5600 block of McLaughlin Avenue at 8:21 p.m. Monday night for a welfare check and found an unresponsive woman inside.

Paramedics from the Alameda County Fire Department responded to the scene but they were unable to revive the victim, according to police. Her identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The death has been deemed suspicious.

NBC Bay Area has learned at least one person was detained by police and that two children were removed from the house. Neighbors said a couple lived in the home with their two young daughters.

"They were nice people," said neighbor David Bier. "I wouldn’t think anything like that would happen."

Police said they might be able to release more information after an autopsy is performed on Wednesday.

If investigators determine the woman was murdered, it would be Newark’s first homicide of 2015.

Investigators are asking anyone who can provide information about the incident to call (510) 578-4237.
