San Jose Officer Shoots, Kills Pedestrian

Shooting occured Monday morning near Pearl and Hillsdale avenues

A San Jose police officer shot and killed a pedestrian in the 700 block of Pearl Ave. Monday morning, investigators said.

The shooting was first reported around 6:05 a.m. in the area near Highway 87 and Capitol Expressway.  The suspect was killed.

The San Jose Police Department says officers were sent to the area after reports of a man walking with a gun.

San Jose Police said the shooting happened during a confrontation between the suspect and two San Jose police officers who had responded after someone reported seeing a man walking in the area with a handgun.

It does not appear that the man fired his gun at the officers, according to the police department.

About half an hour prior to that call, police had received a report of gunshots near Casselino Drive. Officers who responded did not find any victims. Later on, they found a car with bullet holes, and it is believed that the man killed was responsible for shooting at the car, the police department said.

Police were on the scene and the area can be considered safe, but expect lots of police cars and other emergency vehicles.

Streets in that area could be closed for much of the day.

The shooting caps a busy weekend for the department, including a second officer-involved-shooting Friday and a weekend shooting near San Jose State University.
