William Ayres Accused of Faking Dementia

Ex-shrink in abuse case accused of faking dementia

San Mateo County prosecutors say a renowned child psychiatrist accused of molesting young patients is faking dementia to avoid prosecution.

During a court hearing Friday, prosecutor Melissa McKowan said 80-year-old William Ayres has been trying to fool doctors into thinking he is mentally unfit to stand trial on nine felony counts.

McKowan pointed to a report from Napa State Hospital, where Ayres has been held since last fall. After evacuating Ayers, the hospital's doctors determined he had been faking dementia.

The San Mateo County Times (http://bit.ly/OyDN7x ) reports Ayres' attorney said outside court Friday that numerous doctors have testified that his client suffers from Alzheimer's-related dementia.

In 2009, jurors deadlocked during Ayres' trial. In August last year, both sides agreed that he should be committed.

He's being held in jail without bail.
