Car Theft, Police Pursuit Shut Down Eastbound Highway 4 in Martinez

A car theft and ensuing police pursuit forced California Highway Patrol officers to issue a Sig-alert and shut down eastbound Highway 4 in Martinez on Tuesday.

The collision was reported around 6 p.m., west of Interstate 680.

According to the CHP, Contra Costa County sheriff's deputies tried to stop the driver of a vehicle, that had been reported stolen, near Highway 4 and Alhambra Avenue. The driver, however, fled.

The driver is also accused of striking multiple cars while he was trying to escape. It is unclear if anyone was injured.

CHP officers laid out spike strips near Highway 4 and I-680 interchange, which stopped the driver.

CHP officers were not sure how many people were in the car, but said that one person tried to run away, but was caught.

The Sig-alert was canceled just after 7 p.m.

Further details were not immediately available.
