Authorities on Wednesday took a driver into custody after he crashed into a backyard in Oakland and later assaulted emergency responders, according to police.
One officer suffered "significant" injuries but is expected to make a full recovery following the assault, according to police. The 38-year-old driver was also hurt, but his injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.
He was arrested for attempted murder of an officer and four counts of assault, Oakland police said.
The driver was believed to be driving southbound along Golf Links Road at a high rate of speed when he veered from the roadway, drove onto a private driveway, launched into the air, smacked into a tree, garage and retaining wall, and eventually ended up in a mangled mess in a backyard along the 3600 block of Dorisa Avenue, according to police.
The driver hopped out of the car and walked away before coming across first responders at the corner of Golf Links Road and Calafia Avenue, police said. First responders proceeded to care for the driver. At one point during treatment, the driver attacked first responders with a spinal board.
It took multiple officers to eventually restrain the driver and take him into custody, police said.
No one else was inside the car at the time of the crash, according to police.
