A series of seasonal trash pickup stations situated in Dolores Park from May through October of this year collected more than 42,840 gallons of trash, the city announced on Wednesday.
City officials said that the total amount of trash collected in the "Eco Pop-up" stations equaled nearly half of the total amount of waste collected in the park in the same time period.
The pickup stations had staff at each location who encouraged park goers to throw away compost and recyclables in the designated containers.
City officials said the stations operated from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the weekends and during special events with volunteers and staff who sorted out what was inserted in the containers. More than 7,000 gallons of trash can accumulate on a busy weekend, city officials said.
