1 Dead Following Mobile Home Park Fire in San Jose: Officials

A 22-year-old man died in a mobile home fire that also left a 4-year-old girl displaced late Thursday in San Jose, officials said.

The victim was identified as Minh Ho.

The two-alarm fire was reported at 4:43 p.m. at the Westwinds Mobile Home Park in the 500 block of Hermitage Street in North San Jose. A 4-year-old who was initally reported missing during the blaze was later found safe elsewhere, fire officials said.

Witnesses saw a young man come out of the home then run back in, and they believe he feared the girl still was inside. They did not see the man exit the home again, the witnesses said.

"That young man died a hero," witness Kathy Powell said.

Fire officials said they couldn't confirm the dead victim was the same young man.

Another two-alarm fire was reported in the city's Cambrian Park area shortly after the mobile home park blaze, firefighters said.

The second fire started at about the same time at a preschool in the 14800 block of Bercaw Lane, according to a fire official.

Daycare workers at Early Discoveries Child Development Center discovered the fire while children were playing outside, according to fire officials.

All of the 15 children and seven adults moved to a nearby parking lot and reported the emergency at 4:38 p.m.

Firefighters responded and saw heavy smoke and a fire visible inside the building. There was also heavy fire involvement in the attic.

The fire was under control about an hour later, according to fire officials.

No injuries were reported in that blaze.
