Freeway Shooting in Richmond Leaves 1 Dead, Snarls Traffic

Westbound lanes on Interstate Highway 80 in Richmond have reopened after a 40-year-old man died this early morning when his vehicle went down an embankment following a shooting.

At 1:08 a.m. the CHP Golden Gate Division received a reports of a crash on the highway near Hilltop Drive, according to CHP officials.

Upon arrival, officers found a driver in a silver Jeep SUV that went down an embankment along the highway. CHP officials believe an unknown suspect vehicle drove alongside the Jeep and fired several rounds into it.

The Jeep then drifted across the highway and went down the embankment, overturning several times.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:43 a.m., CHP officials said.

Investigators believe the shooter targeted the victim. There have been a slew of shootings around the same Richmond area in the last few months, and possible connections are being investigated. Police say there have been around seven incidents, but did not comment further.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the CHP at (707) 551-4100 or (510) 622-4609.
