Gas Line Breaks Outside Peninsula Middle School

A gas main break outside of a Peninsula middle school on Thursday caused heavy traffic buildup and the relocation of many children from school grounds.

The break occured outside of Tierra Linda Middle School in San Carlos shortly after 1 p.m., while a summer day camp was in session. The children in attendence were moved to the nearby Baptist Church parking lot. School staffers worked to inform parents about the move.

Officers issued a shelter-in-place warning to residents living in the area.

As of 1:30 p.m., gas flow from the break stopped and PG&E was onsite "wrapping up" repairs, according to the San Mateo County sheriff's department.

The process was expected to take about an hour, at which time the shelter-in-place could be lifted.
