Walnut Creek Police Dog Stabbed While Detaining Suspect is Recovering

A police dog who was stabbed several times while detaining a hit-and-run suspect in Walnut Creek on Saturday is recovering and should be back on the job in a few weeks, the Walnut Creek Police Department said.

Sheyna and her K-9 officer partner both were injured during the pursuit of Rolando Gonzalez, 33, who struck a pedestrian in a quiet Walnut Creek neighborhood and nearly hit another person while fleeing the scene.

When officers caught up to Gonzalez, he rammed a patrol car and fled on foot. Police fired Tasers, bean-bag shot guns and then unleashed Sheyna, Sgt. Joe Donnelly said.

"The K-9 was sent into the bushes to try and apprehend the suspect," he said. "It was considered the safest option at that time."

Police say Gonzalez stabbed the dog several times, but she fought him off, allowing other officers to detain him without harming anyone else.

"The K-9 received several stab wounds about the area of her head and throat," Donnelly said. "She was able to basically take him into custody, and that was what we needed."

Gonzalez is being charged with hit-and-run, assault with a deadly weapon, harming a police dog, driving while under the influence and resisting arrest, police said.

Sheyna received several stitches for her wounds, and is expected to fully recover, as is the injured officer.

The department has received an outpouring of support and inquiries about helping to pay for Sheyna's veternarian bill. Those wishing to donate can do so by visiting the Wanut Creek Police Department website's K-9 Unit page.
