Reports of a possible pipe bomb found in north San Jose sparked nearby businesses to shelter-in-place on Monday as police and the bomb squad examined the device.
The suspicious item was later determined to be a device that extracts a chemical from marijuana, police said.
Police at 3 p.m. were called to the area at Kings Row at Industrial Way after a tow truck driver noticed a suspicious device inside of a vehicle he was hooking to his truck.
The tow truck driver told police the device resembled a pipe bomb.
Employees who worked nearby told NBC Bay Area they were ordered to shelter-in-place for about three hours.
The intersection, which has been closed to traffic, is near where Interstate 880 meets Highway 101 in North San Jose.
