San Mateo County Offers Free Bus, Train to Furloughed Workers

Furloughed federal workers can get free bus and train rides in San Mateo County starting Thursday, according to the San Mateo County Transit District.

The workers can ride for free by showing their federal government employee identification cards to bus operators on SamTrans and to conductors on Caltrain, the transit agency said.

The free service will remain available for the duration of the government shutdown.

A gas station owner in Fremont is offering free gas to federal employees affected by the government shutdown.

"We sympathize with the financial burdens that federal employees are faced with due to this unprecedented situation," Transit District General Manager Jim Hartnett said in a news release.

First-time riders can visit www.samtrans.com or www.caltrain.com to learn how to plan a trip or by calling our Customer Service Center at 1-800-660-4287.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo introduced another proposal Wednesday to support federal employees furloughed during a month-long government shutdown by offering them 90-day eviction protection. Marianne Favro reports.
