Skeletal Remains Recovered From Below Bridge at Lake Sonoma

Skeletal remains first spotted by a diver in December have been recovered from the murky waters below a bridge over Lake Sonoma, Sonoma County Sheriff's Office officials said Wednesday.

The remains were first reported on Dec. 9, 2013, by a recreational diver, who saw them in around 100 feet of water below the bridge, according to Lt. Carlos Basurto.

A Marin County dive team made several attempts on Dec. 10 and Dec. 12 to retrieve the remains, but the depth and murky conditions made the operation difficult.

Divers were able to confirm the presence of the remains, however, and retrieve several large bones, Basurto said.

The sheriff's office requested help from the FBI Technical Dive Team, and after dives on Tuesday and today, the team was able to retrieve the majority of the remains, Basurto said.

The identity of the remains is unknown at this time, and the case is being investigated by the Sonoma County Coroner's Office, Basurto said.

Anyone with possible information on these remains is asked to call the coroner's office at 707-565-5070.
