Vehicle in Lake Merritt Tied to Oakland Homicide, Drowning Investigation

Oakland police and Alameda County Sheriff's Office crews recovered a vehicle from Lake Merritt Monday afternoon. The SUV in the water is tied to a homicide and drowning in the area earlier this month

The March 15 incident occurred around 4:15 a.m. when a caller reported seeing a couple in the water and hearing a woman's voice. An arriving police officer plucked 39-year-old Michael Grace from the water. Grace was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Emergency crews later pulled 24-year-old Tayana Johnson from the water, who was prounounced dead at the scene. Family members said Grace and Johnson were in a dating relationship.

An investigation is ongoing.
