Germany Wants Facebook to Disable Facial Recognition

Germans don't like being recognized on Facebook.

The European country has reportedly asked the Palo Alto-based social-networking company to disable its facial recognition feature because it violates privacy.

Hamburg's Data Protection Authority sent a letter to Facebook Tuesday advising it to obtain user permission before using facial recognition software to identity them, according to Engadget.

The authority is reportedly not satisfied that users can opt out of the service in their personal settings. It deems that too invasive.

The letter requests a response from Facebook within two weeks or face a fine up to $427,000.
