A 26-year-old man who East Palo Alto police say was drinking and handling his loaded firearm shot himself in the head on New Year's Eve.
Sgt. Jeff Liu said the man was taken to the hospital in critical condition after shooting himself just after 9 p.m. in the 900 block of Bay Road
Police said they learned the man had been "consuming alcoholic beverages in addition to handling his loaded firearm," and that the shooting appeared to be an accident.
