An armed teenager was fatally shot by an officer in South San Francisco Tuesday night, according to police.

Officers stopped two pedestrians about 9 p.m. near the 2300 block of Westborough Boulevard when one of the officers saw the man had a gun, according to police reports.

One of the officers shot 15-year-old Derrick Gaines and then began to administer First Aid.

Gaines was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The officers reported that they initially stopped the two teenagers because they saw them acting in a "suspicious manner."

South San Francisco Police Department Chief Mike Massoni expressed his condolences over Gaines death.

Captain Mike Brosnan  said the department will conduct a "transparent investigation" into the "tragic event."

The city's last officer-involved-shooting was more than 30 years ago in 1981.
