“Major Milestone”: U.S., China Reach Climate Deal

The world's two biggest economies and greenhouse gas emitters, United States and China, unveiled targets Wednesday to reduce greenhouse gases in hopes to jump-start negotiations with an eye toward reaching a worldwide climate agreement in Paris next year. At a joint news conference with President Xi Jinping, President Obama said the plan includes new targets for carbon emissions reductions by the United States and a first-ever commitment by China to stop its emissions from growing by 2030. Obama is on a three-country tour to Asia to attend the APEC and G20 summits. On Tuesday, at the ceremonial opening of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, Obama said he wanted to take U.S. and China's "relationship to a new level."
